"The first time I saw jiu-jitsu on film was Lethal Weapon where Mel Gibson's character triangles Gary Busey in the final fight scene."

--> this fight scene was choreographed by Rorion Gracie. For those who want to see the scene :

Notice Danny Glover shouting to Gibson to break Gary Busey's neck when Gibson has him in a triangle.

Then there is a scene worth watching "James Cagney does Judo"

There are many judo throws in the fight, but the interesting moves are an armbar attempt, and then near the end there is the choke from the back, using the other one's collar. The movie was released in 1945, so obviously the moves were inspired by Judo, but that doesn't make it any less a BJJ technique either. Would be hard to find an even older movie which has (what are now) BJJ techniques in it.

And here you can find a scene from an episode of Walker Texas Ranger, wherein Chuck rolls with the Machados

There are two Hong Kong movies acted by Donnie Yen as the main cast that has number of BJJ moves as well.
